Now Overdrive Downloadable Audios &  e-Books has added thousands of in-copyright audios e-Book records with free “e-Book samples” for immediate access on listening/reading devices and platforms.  You can download stories on your computer or  mobile device and decide if they are right for you.  This will reduce the number of holds and wait  lists.   Take a look before checking it out,  just search and if  your interested click sample.

Since January 2011 we have had a sensory story time at the Langley-Adams Library.  This story time, which is opened to all children ages 2-5, is especially geared to children with sensory integration issues.  It is also for those children who may have difficulty sitting through our regular story times.  This story time is held one day every other month.  Our next story time will take place on Mon. 11/21 at 1:30pm.  Starting in January 2012 we will hold this story time on Saturday mornings, instead of during the week.

For each story time I pick a theme, such as colors or the farm, and read books related to that theme.  We always start and end with the same songs.  We also do fingerplays/rhymes, three stories (at least one story is an interactive story that the children can help me with), and sometimes an activity with scarves (usually moving the scarves to soft music).  After we sing our goodbye song I blow some bubbles and then the children have the opportunity to color a picture related to the theme, while parents can visit with one another.

Imagine waking up one morning and being told that you can no longer go outside. How would you feel, what would you do?  Now imagine being told that you can no longer read the books you want to read. This analogy may sound extreme, but I don’t really think they are.

• Going outside gives a person freedom to see the world outside their four walls.  Doesn’t a book do the same?
• Outside you are able to meet new people/characters? Doesn’t a book do the same?
• Venturing outside, you have an opportunity to learn about different places.  Doesn’t a book do the same?
• Outside you can explore new things?  Doesn’t a book do the same?

We now have adult programs available on DVD for check out. Meet author and radio host of NPR, Bill Littlefield, or learn the History of the Baker Chocolate Company with author Anthony Sammarco. Take a summer vacation to the Amazon Basin with Professor Ken Thomas.  We have several other great programs to choose from call or stop by for more information.

We have two new series that have been added to our easy reader collection in the children’s room.

- Exploring Countries (France, England, China, Russia, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Canada, and Greece)

- Pet Care Library (Caring for Your Dog, Horse, Hamster, Fish, Rabbit, Parakeet, Turtle, and Cat)

These books will be especially useful to those early elementary students who are interested in reading about those topics or who have to complete a report for school.

We’ve just added the manga series “Death Note” to the teen graphic novel collection!
